Changing Everything
Life can get tough. Some people decide they want to change their home location and workplace to get a fresh start. Sometimes it makes sense to make a big move. For example, getting the opportunity to take further study that will likely open up new job opportunities. Changing everything is not necessarily a bad idea, but it does come with costs that are easy to overlook in the moment when you first decide that you want pretty much everything to change.
Things to consider:
- It takes time to settle into a new community. You can’t make friendships instantaneously. You need to build trust.
- The Bible says people are weak. Undergoing a lot of change makes you vulnerable to your weaknesses. The world is a constantly changing place. Changing everything can easily lead you to feel unsettled. Make sure you don’t do it alone.
Wisdom:
- Don’t neglect or despise the good friendships you built during previous life chapters. While relational pain may be a motivation that pushes you to make the move, you have likely made at least some really good friendships. We mean friendships when it feels like the other person is more like a brother or sister than a friendly acquaintance. Don’t put those friendships in the rearview mirror. They are uncommon and highly valuable life blessings.
- Ask people to pray for you. God loves to answer our prayers with “good gifts” (Matt. 7:11; Luke 11:13). Asking God to help you find your feet after you make a big leap is a very wise decision.
- Talk to God throughout the moving process. It’s so easy to neglect to talk to God. Don’t make this mistake when making a big life choice like changing everything.
