We live in a culture that continually says “express yourself” and “be yourself”. These sentiments sound nice but leave us with questions and anxiety rather than assurance and peace. In a world of people being extra, there’s wisdom in playing it low-key. Overthinking what you’re wearing could make it hard to think selflessly when in groups or engaged in personal conversation.

"Buy what suits yourself to wear, and if it does not suit other people to look at, let them shut their eyes." (Charles Spurgeon, John Ploughman’s Talk, 1869)
